The RHRA has a number of units around the world.  Many of these units are referred to as “Royal Hutt River Guards” and their purpose is to provide a ceremonial and totally defensive type of unit, which along with humanitarian action are the major functions of the RHRDF's.

The 1st North American Royal Hutt River Guards was formed in 2005 to provide a Unit for RHRA officers in the United States of America and Canada, giving a formal structure from which to grow the officer corps in North America, to serve the Sovereign of the Principality of Hutt River (PHR), to assist in obtaining official recognition of the PHR by building close relationships with North American military forces and gaining recognition of the RHRA and the PHR through these relationships, to participate in military-related functions in North America as official representatives of the PHR and its Sovereign, and to educate the military community in North America and the general public about both the PHR and the RHRDF.
